School

I haven't really talked about the kids school. The name of the school is Mareas and it is a private bilingual school. It just opened in November and started with 5 kids and is now at 41. It was started by a few families in town who were looking for something different than the other 2 available options. The primary couple in charge are constantly making needed changes and adjusting as things have grown so much faster than anyone would have ever imagined. The school is modeled after Waldorf schools. Waldorf schools take the idea of teaching in non traditional ways. The kids seem to be happy at school. Who wouldn't enjoy going to the beach for a math lesson or going out and picking a coconut to bring back and paint for a art project.

The school has a real mix of students. It is probably 50% Tico and the other 50% are kids from the states, Spain, and elsewhere. Mareas has kids from preschool to high school. Given the span of ages and the number of students there are many "combo" classes. Genevieve and Dane are in the same class and it spans from third to sixth grade. All and all it is going well. Amy has been asked to write a school newsletter and plans on helping in other ways as well. I have spent a couple of afternoons building desks and seating with a couple of other dads.
